Ceramics Job Description

Ceramics is one of the most popular (and messiest!) classes that Greystone has to offer. Located on the bottom floor of our Fine Arts Center, Ceramics has a state of the art facility complete with 12 wheels, slab rollers, kilns, and much more! Our program is run by a Greystone alumna who is a professional artist. Counselors will teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced campers throughout the summer.

What’s a Typical Day Like in Ceramics?

Ceramics begins each class by splitting into 3 groups that rotate through the studio. The wheel deck, hand-building, and glazing stations operate at all times with different projects at each. Each day, you will be assigned to a certain area and will rotate through the studio as the week progresses. You will also assist in loading and unloading kilns, as well as sorting, glazing, and finishing projects.

As a part of the Ceramics staff, you will be an essential part of a close-knit team that will balance safety with fun. Our Ceramics staff encourages and engages with our campers throughout the class, helping them to achieve their goals and surpass their expectations. You will love working on our Ceramics staff if you enjoy encouraging those around you while also having a keen eye for safety and detail.

What are the activity teaching periods like?

For June, Main, and August Camps, we have 5 classes in the morning and two classes in the afternoon that are 40 minutes long. In Ceramics, after the girls are in their perspective stations, they will receive instruction on what project they will be doing that day and are challenged to finish that project before the bell rings.

What training and certifications do I need?

Our Ceramics staff participates in pre-camp training led by a local professional and focuses on teaching strategies and studio safety. This training will take place at Greystone.
